Wow
I had a chance to hear Alan Kay talk during a visit to HP Labs a week or so ago. Among other things, it motivated me to finally sit down and have a look at Squeak.

I'd heard Ted Kaehler and others talk about it. I have fond memories of playing with Smalltalk at various times in the past, starting when I was an undergrad at CMU. I know the folks in Extremadura include Squeak in the systems they deploy in schools, and I even came home from Malaga with a CD containing their packages! But I just hadn't ever gotten around to actually doing anything with Squeak.

Now I have... and even better, so have my kids. ;-) In fact, while I think I understand what's actually going on better, my daughter now has spent much more time playing with eToys than I have. I'm really curious to see how far she goes with this...

AMSAT-DL Annual Meeting
It looks like I'll be in Munich on business the week before the AMSAT-DL annual meeting on 8 May. If everything works out, I hope to attend the meeting and get an in-person update on how things are going with the P3E project... which is one of the satellites that will use the CAN-Do! widgets I helped design...

amanda, tar updated
Uploaded tar 1.13.93-3 on Friday. Quick fix from upstream for the problem with lone zero blocks. May or may not be enough to make everyone happy with tar for sarge... we'll see.

Uploaded amanda 1:2.4.4p2-2 tonight, mostly to fix the postinst so that it doesn't assume /var/backups is still owned by user backup. Fixed a few typos and rolled in the Japanese debconf translation as long as I was uploading.
